In the Garden, Talking 'bout the garden.... #7

Brrrrrrrrr.  The temperature did a dip and dip and dip and dip and diiiipppppp.  One day it's Spring, then it's Summer and then we're back in Winter.  I'm just confused and cold!!

Monday I dragged myself outside to water.  Even though the chill factor was considerable, the petunias were looking mighty dry and in need of a beverage.  While watering, I noticed that the dahlia (supposedly an annual) I planted in my backyard flower bed last summer is coming back.  I was very surprised to see those deep purple leaves under the branches of my blueberry bush.  Last year the dahlia attracted so many bees.  They were crowded in those flowers and buzzing around like it was the last call for alchohol!  If the dahlia actually blooms this year, then I'm naming the flower bed Club Nectar 'cause it's sure to bee a party!

Tuesday I decided to work on the headquarters but after adding an extra coat of orange paint to the door, I had to call it quits because my bones couldn't handle the chill.  Once back in the house, I pulled out a few old magazines and started looking for more inspiration.  I stumbled upon an article in an old Martha Stewart magazine on Jimmy Williams - fashion designer turned gardener extraodinaire and co-author of the book 'Seed to Skillet'.   Wednesday, I shared the article on Facebook & Twitter along with a video promoting the book.  It's never too late to shine a light on something or someone inspiring - right?! That evening I went to the 2nd planning meeting for the Community Garden coming to Hotchkiss Field Community Center.  Dominic Barrett, the dynamic program director from Shalom Farms conducted the meeting.  He really knows how to engage people and lead in a way that makes you feel included in the process.  I have very good feelings about working with him and am so glad to have joined the group at the very beginning.  We discussed tentative dates for the first community work day and grand opening,  the volunteer activities necessary to keep the garden growing and how we can engage the community at large.  Best of all, Dominic kept the meeting short.  We discussed the business and rolled out which is just how I like it.

Thursday I found another more recent video on YouTube on Jimmy Williams which was done by Baker Creek Seeds and titled 'Jimmy Williams Nursery (HD)' ( http://youtu.be/4A4t7lKFxCs ).  The giant collard greens were like WHOA!!  He makes it all look so easy. When I jammed my finger while trying to turn my compost the other day, this gardening thing didn't feel good or easy.  I was holding my hand doing that shout where your lips are moving but there's no sound coming out and trying my best not to cuss!   Anyway, I've digressed... there's an overwhelming theme of peace and true joy in everything that I've come across on Mr. Williams.  I'm drawn to it like the gravity that keeps my feet on the ground.

It's finally Friday and while I might take a stroll around the yard and sprinkle a little water in the garden, I don't plan to do much more.  I'm having dinner with Paulette, one of my besties tonight.  We have those deep, thought provoking conversations that can go on for hours and linger in the mind for days.  I'm looking forward to a little wine, a little food and some good girl time!

  1. Another great post today Telmore. Sometimes I actually forget how funny you can be. You were quite a busy bee this week. I love the Dahlia and checking out your garden his week, looking good. Looking forward to hearing more and more about what will be happening at Hotchkiss Field. It just does my heart good to see you so involved in your grandmother's old neighborhood
