We live in a world built on now, we want fast food, can't stand waiting in line, text instead of talking, use DVRs to skip commercials and on it goes. Being a totally impatient person since my youth, I don't typically like waiting. However, I learned early on that mother nature will not be rushed.
A seed has a certain amount of time to germinate, the true leaves can take weeks to appear and the time from sowing seeds to harvesting can feel like forever. I remember purchasing my first tiny tomato transplants and planting them in pots on my patio. Every morning I rushed outside to check on my plants only to find that they looked pretty much the same as the previous day. Maybe they were slightly taller or a bit fuller but the progress seemed extremely slow. I'm sure that I did too much of everything while waiting for something to happen - too much watering, too much fertilizing, too much relocating of the pots. No matter what I did, the plants would not progress but then I went on vacation. After being gone for a while with no one to check on my tomatoes, I didn't now what to expect. I returned home to find that the plants had JUMPED! They were tall, green and vibrant; soon after I saw the first tiny tomatoes form. When it finally came time to harvest those tomatoes, I felt such a sense of accomplishment. The wait was worth it.
I've since learned to plan my garden in a way that ensures that there's always something to harvest or a task to be done in caring for my garden. There's no need to check the tomatoes everyday because there are other things to do. Some days, I do feel a tiny bit of urgency creeping in but then I'm reminded to be patient and let nature take its course.
