Down the rabbit hole

The neighborhood rabbit favors my yard.  Isn't that lovely?!..... NOT!!! My neighbor says that the rabbit goes under my fence and into the backyard every evening around 9:30PM.  The last time I actually saw the rabbit in the yard was a few months back.  After being run down by Queen and barely escaping through a hole in the old fence, I assumed the rabbit was done visiting us; clearly I was wrong.

While doing yard work over the weekend, Gene made two discoveries: (1) the rabbit has a comfortable home of her own in our backyard under the Angel's Trumpets.  Apparently the mass of greenery and flowers makes for both a nice shady area and a good hiding spot.

(2) the rabbit made a home for her babies in our front yard right in between two of my raised garden boxes.  Thankfully Gene saw something move before he started with the weed eater in that area.  Upon closer inspection, he found three baby cotton tails nestled in a hole, covered by a layer of fur and shielded by the grass.

When I made it home, Gene took me around to the spot and carefully uncovered the rabbit hole so I could have a look. The cute little babies were still snuggled tightly together sleeping peacefully with no clue that we were peering in on them.

I was tickled by my look down the rabbit hole and thought the baby bunnies were so cute but I would prefer not to engage in a battle over who will have first dibs on the carrots and other fall veggies soon to be sprouting in my front yard garden.   I guess a sign stating NO RABBITS ALLOWED would be ineffective which means it's time for more fencing.
