In the Garden, Talking 'bout the garden.... #9/10

- Week of  April 23rd
Rain, rain, go away, come again another day.   As a child, I would often sing this little chant whenever rain kept me from fun outside activities.  Rain was not a good thing when it ruined the dodge ball game, hide & go seek or time spent climbing trees. One drop of rain meant the pool was closing and visits to the beach were immediately halted.   Rain accompanied by thunder and lightning meant all electronics were turned off and everyone in the house had to sit quietly until the storm passed.    Fast forward to the teen years and rain could turn a stylish hairdo into a travesty, a mix of humidity & rain  was a major catastrophe and getting caught without an umbrella was absolute disaster.  Now that I live for days in the garden, I get excited when the weather report calls for showers!

It rained all week and while my planned outdoor activities (such as pulling weeds, completing the paint job on the TG headquarters and planting flowers in my hanging baskets) didn't work out, I was so happy for my veggies.   I'm especially pleased with the appearance of my carrot tops as they are tall and bushy.  My turnips have more holes than I can count but they've continued to grow well in spite of bug attacks.  The spinach is progressing nicely and the arugula has finally started to mature.

Thanks to my parents and their generous birthday gifts, I was able to start purchasing items for my garden expansion.  My garden plan was done by Nina Zinn (www.urbanbackyardedibles.com) and I'm really thrilled about what will be a completely edible garden consisting of eight 4x8 raised beds full of vegetables and edible flowers with a variety of berries and grapes spread throughout.  So far, I have wood for one raised bed and two garden centerpieces (tall planters with iron trellises). I'll also be placing one 4x8 raised bed at two satellite locations and have already dropped supplies off for those builds.  I'm hoping that my pal, Roc Turner, will be availabe to help me get them going over the Mother's Day Weekend.

The demands of daily life kept me out of the garden this week but I did manage to pull weeds on a few mornings.  I also visited a local spot for old bricks, lighting and outdoor items where I found a cute chair for the TG Headquarters and an old tin pail that I'll eventually use for a mini garden of some kind (maybe succulents).   I also found a nice hat for garden workdays and picked up rose gloves so that I can work on containing and/or relocating my rose bushes.  Next week I'll be back in the garden full speed ahead.  Summer vegetables will be planted and hopefully something from early spring will be ready to eat.
