| My Grandmother's Dogwood in Bloom |
My grandmother received this Dogwood as a gift over 20 years ago after admiring a tree in her employer's yard. She loves it and is sure to bring it up whenever she visits the house. She's also asked me not to cut it down.
Sometimes I stand under it, watching the way the sunlight trickles through the branches and listening to the soft rustle of the leaves. I have my own personal appreciation and hope to enjoy it for many years to come. It has, however, crossed my mind that I should do something more with this area.
Saturday, February 18th, I attended the first of six free gardening classes sponsored by Richmond Grows Gardens. It dawned on me during the class that I can grow more if I venture outside of my backyard. I decided that the Dogwood (which is located in the front yard) would be the perfect anchor for a garden expansion. As spring is quickly approaching, there's much to do including plotting out the area for my raised beds, constructing the beds and determining what I should grow while keeping it aesthetically pleasing to me and my neighbors. I will document my progress and share here in pictures or video. The tree, which was given to my grandmother and entrusted to me, will serve as a reminder of how a gift can keep on giving and the garden will serve as proof of how information can empower.
